Europe steel, wind sectors want speedier EU action

The European steel and wind industries have called for EU commitment to tackling availability and affordability of renewables and renewable hydrogen. This comes amid moves to accelerate away from Russian fossil fuels.

European steelmakers association Eurofer said “The steel industry has developed breakthrough technologies for producing low carbon steel, but we don’t have enough renewables production nor the related infrastructure to transport it… Not to talk about hydrogen: there is no developed infrastructure at all.”

EU wind industry association WindEurope also called on European policy-makers to speed up decision-making.

The Repower plan, designed to phase out dependence on Russian fossil fuels, sets a 510GW target for installed wind capacity by 2030. WindEurope said this equates to 39GW of new wind per year, “more than double what we’re installing now.”
