Renewable energy

Renewable energy certification enables organisations to demonstrate and verify use of renewable electricity.

By purchasing renewable energy certificates companies can substantiate sustainability claims, support renewable power markets and utilise renewable electricity consumption as part of their broader decarbonisation and emissions reduction efforts.

What is renewable energy certification?

Renewable energy certificates are market-based instruments that track electricity generated from sources such as wind, solar, hydro and biomass, allowing companies to demonstrate that their electricity consumption is matched with renewable generation.

Each certificate represents one megawatt-hour (MWh) of renewable electricity supplied to the grid. Certificates can be traded independently of the physical electricity, enabling organisations to procure renewable energy attributes even when the generation source is located elsewhere.

For many companies, renewable energy certification is an important tool for meeting sustainability targets and supporting the growth of renewable power markets.

Who should consider renewable energy certification?

Renewable energy certification is suited to organisations seeking to demonstrate renewable electricity use in sustainability disclosures, carbon accounting and net-zero commitments. While certificates do not directly reduce emissions, they support renewable generation and signal environmental commitment to stakeholders and customers.

Investors, financial institutions and public bodies such as universities, local authorities and government agencies, may use certification to support environmental, social and governance (ESG) disclosures, assess climate risk and meet institutional climate targets.

They are also relevant for energy suppliers and renewable generators, who issue, trade and retire certificates as part of electricity sales.
