Drax Submits Plans for World Largest Carbon Capture Project at Selby Power Station

Drax, an energy company based in the UK, has recently submitted plans to construct two bioenergy units at its power station in Selby, North Yorkshire. With an investment of £2 billion over the next decade, these units are set to become the largest carbon capture and storage (CCS) project in the world.

Once operational, the two units will have the capacity to capture a minimum of 8 million tonnes of CO2 annually. This significant feat positions Drax at the forefront of carbon capture technology in the power sector.

Will Gardiner, the CEO of Drax Group, expressed-ew the company’s commitment to investing billions of pounds and creating thousands of jobs in developing bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) in the UK. Gardiner emphasised that this investment is contingent upon the government’s implementation of supportive policies to facilitate the feasibility and implementation of negative emissions technologies. He further emphasised that BECCS at Drax will not only remove millions of tonnes of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere each year but also generate reliable and renewable power that is crucial for the country’s energy needs. Gardiner believes that no other technology can achieve this dual purpose as effectively as BECCS.

Construction work for BECCS at the Drax power station is projected to commence as early as 2024. The ambitious project holds the potential to make a substantial impact on carbon emissions and contribute significantly to the UK’s efforts in combating climate change.
