More than 70 companies with headquarters and/or operations in India have voluntarily committed to RE100, a global initiative that brings together large businesses dedicated to achieving 100% renewable electricity goals. These companies aim to procure renewable power at scale and advocate for policies and regulations that support their RE100 targets while aligning with government climate goals.
In the recently launched "RE100 India Policy Asks" by the Climate Group, there is a call for the development of a policy and regulatory environment that enables 100% corporate sourcing of renewable power in India.
India has set ambitious renewable power capacity targets as part of its comprehensive climate action plan. The country aims to increase its renewable power capacity from 175GW in 2022 to 450GW by 2030, representing a growth of approximately 157%. Commercial and industrial (C&I) consumers constitute a significant portion of India's total electricity consumption. However, in 2018, this group accounted for 51% of total electricity consumption but only 3% of total renewable power consumption. Therefore, the greater adoption of clean energy by C&I consumers is crucial for meeting national clean energy objectives and global climate commitments.
