Alexandre de Juniac, the incoming director of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), has identified the establishment of a global system for taxing carbon emissions as a top priority for the airline industry. De Juniac, currently the CEO of Air France-KLM Group, emphasizes the need for a universal approach to carbon taxation to avoid penalizing certain airlines while others remain exempt.
The United Nations' International Civil Aviation Authority (ICAO) is set to convene in September to discuss capping the aviation industry's emissions at 2020 levels. Unlike the Paris climate agreement, aviation emissions were not addressed in the accord. ICAO aims to reach a consensus among its 191 members on a market-based mechanism for emissions trading at the assembly.
De Juniac recognizes the significance of this issue and highlights the important role that IATA has to play in collaboration with ICAO to address it effectively.
Having recently announced his departure from Air France-KLM Group, de Juniac will assume the position of IATA director after the expiration of Tony Tyler's mandate in June. The transition is expected to occur around July, pending discussions with the outgoing director.
