EU state aid laws may change to allow up to 100% renewable energy subsidisation

European Commission Initiates Public Consultation on State Aid Changes to Support Renewable Energy Projects

The European Commission has launched a public consultation seeking feedback on a proposal to amend state aid laws, enabling EU countries to provide subsidies of up to 100% for renewable energy projects. The proposed changes aim to enhance support for renewable energy and align state aid guidelines with relevant EU legislation. Interested parties have eight weeks, until August 2, 2021, to participate in the consultation process.

The Commission's proposal entails several key aspects. Firstly, it involves broadening financial support and expanding the scope of the Environmental and Energy State Aid Guidelines (EEAG). This would provide a more comprehensive framework for facilitating renewable energy projects. Secondly, the proposal aims to increase flexibility and streamline the existing rules, simplifying procedures and reducing administrative burdens for member states. These measures seek to facilitate the implementation of renewable energy initiatives.

Additionally, the Commission plans to introduce safeguards to ensure effective and targeted allocation of aid when necessary. This will help ensure that subsidies are directed to projects that contribute significantly to the decarbonization and energy transition goals of the EU. Lastly, the proposal emphasizes the importance of aligning and ensuring coherence with relevant EU legislation, providing a harmonized approach to state aid rules in the context of renewable energy.

The public consultation offers stakeholders and interested parties an opportunity to provide their input on the proposed changes. This engagement process will help shape the final guidelines and ensure that they reflect the needs and considerations of various stakeholders involved in the renewable energy sector. The Commission's aim is to create a supportive framework that promotes the development and deployment of renewable energy projects across the European Union.
