High Energy Prices Added to EU Summit Agenda' Policy Toolbox and Discussions Planned

The upcoming EU leader summit scheduled for 21-22 October will include discussions on high energy prices, and responding to the "immediate concerns" expressed by households, industries, and small businesses, as highlighted by European Council President Charles Michel. To address this issue, the European Commission plans to release a "policy toolbox" in the coming weeks to assist national governments in responding to the surge in natural gas and power prices.

Additionally, EU environment ministers are set to discuss energy prices on 5 October, following debates on the proposed revision of the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) by the European Commission. On 22 September, EU energy ministers engaged in an impromptu debate on the proposed ETS revisions, while ministers responsible for competitiveness also discussed the topic. During a formal EU Council meeting on 29 September, the ministers emphasized that access to "affordable decarbonized energy" is crucial for the success of the Fit for 55 initiatives. They further called for regular updates on the progress of the debate, led by EU environment and energy ministers.
