Aviation: ETS, CORSIA, & SAF

Navigating aviation's environmental challenges

The aviation industry is on a mission to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.

With growing environmental policies and regulations, the pressure on airlines and stakeholders to act swiftly has never been greater. Immediate action is essential to meet these ambitious goals and ensure compliance.

Understanding ETS, CORSIA, and SAF

ETS: Emission Trading Schemes

Under the EU Emission Trading Scheme (EU ETS) and the UK Emission Trading Scheme (UK ETS), all airlines, regardless of origin, must track, report, and validate their emissions. They must surrender allowances equivalent to their emissions, a requirement that applies to all airlines operating within European and UK airspace.

CORSIA: Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation

Established by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) in 2016, CORSIA is the first global market-based measure for aviation. It provides a coordinated and standardised approach to offsetting international aviation emissions using voluntary carbon credits.

SAF: Sustainable Aviation Fuel

SAF is a key component of the aviation industry's strategy to achieve net-zero carbon emissions. It is expected to play a significant role in reducing emissions, potentially contributing up to 65% of the reduction needed for aviation to reach net-zero emissions by 2050.

Specialist training for a net-zero aviation future

We provide targeted training to help organisations navigate carbon markets, meet emissions compliance requirements, and integrate sustainable aviation practices into their operations.

This course delivers clear, practical insights into the EU ETS and UK ETS — including scope, structure, and policy updates like Fit-for-55. You’ll also learn how to manage Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) processes in line with the Monitoring and Reporting Regulation (MRR).

A core focus is the strategic use of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) in decarbonisation. We’ll unpack how SAF is treated under both ETS schemes and compare its role within CORSIA, giving you the knowledge to support compliance and carbon reduction goals.
Key areas:

ETS: Understanding the concept, purpose, and market functioning of systems like the EU and UK ETS

CORSIA: Insights into the first global market-based measure for aviation emissions

SAF: Exploring the role of SAF in decarbonising aviation
