Mars’ global goal of using 100% renewables

Mars Commits to Net Zero Value Chain by 2050 and Sets Interim Targets

Mars, a global food and pet care company, has announced its pledge to achieve a net zero value chain by 2050. In line with this commitment, the company will join the “Business Ambition for 1.5°C pledge” and the UN’s Race to Zero initiative. Mars plans to publish a comprehensive net zero roadmap in 2022, outlining five-year climate action milestones. The company will also link executive pay to decarbonization efforts. Mars’ ongoing commitment to ending deforestation in its supply chains will contribute to its net zero ambition.

Renewable Energy Adoption and Expansion:

Mars has made significant strides in its renewable energy adoption, already using or purchasing renewable energy to cover over 50% of its total electricity footprint. Notably, it achieves 100% renewable electricity at its sites in several countries, including Australia, Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, France, Hungary, Lithuania, Mexico, Poland, Spain, and the UK. The company is also on track to add India to this list by the end of 2021. Mars aims to further increase its sourcing of renewable electricity beyond these 11 countries and is exploring a renewable thermal pilot project.

Power Purchase Agreements and Brand Commitments:

Earlier this year, Mars announced a new power purchase agreement (PPA) to ensure that renewable energy covers over 100% of the electricity needs for 2,000 veterinary hospitals in the United States. The company’s CEO, Grant F. Reid, emphasizes the urgency of bold and accelerated global intervention in response to climate change. Mars recognizes the importance of net zero targets that encompass emissions across the entire value chain and the necessity of setting tangible interim targets. As part of its broader commitment, Mars’ largest brand, Royal Canin, has committed to becoming certified carbon neutral by 2025.

Mars’ commitment to achieving a net zero value chain by 2050 demonstrates its dedication to addressing climate change. By joining global initiatives and setting clear targets, the company aims to play a significant role in mitigating the impacts of climate change. Mars’ focus on renewable energy adoption, including power purchase agreements and expanding coverage to additional countries, showcases its commitment to sustainable operations. The company’s net zero plan, covering its total greenhouse gas footprint, further underlines its comprehensive approach. Mars’ efforts extend to its brands, with Royal Canin committing to becoming carbon neutral by 2025. Through these ambitious actions, Mars sets a notable example for the food and pet care industry and contributes to the broader global efforts to combat climate change.
