European Commission Distributes 62% of Free Allowances for 2023 Emissions

The European Commission has provided an update on the distribution of free allowances entitled to industry for 2023 emissions, revealing that 62% of the allowances have been distributed. This equates to approximately 327 million allowances, an increase from the 50% that had been distributed two weeks earlier.

Several countries, including Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, and Croatia, have already completed their distribution process. Belgium, Sweden, Estonia, and Slovenia have also distributed the majority of their allowances, with only a small portion remaining.

However, there are still seven countries that have not yet started issuing allowances. Spain, Poland, and Finland are among the countries with the highest share of undistributed free allowances.

This update highlights the progress made in allocating allowances to industry for the upcoming year. It also emphasises the varying pace at which different countries are distributing their allowances, with some countries being more proactive than others.

The distribution of free allowances is a crucial aspect of the European Commission's efforts to manage emissions and promote sustainability. As countries continue to distribute their allowances, it will be important to monitor the progress and ensure that the process is carried out efficiently and fairly.
